John Murray land papers, 1734-1828.

Legal papers, 1734-1828, mainly deeds, releases, land grants, patents, and mortgages relating to land in New York City and New York State, several for land near Geneseo, with a few documents relating to land in Pennsylvania. There are also a few other legal documents: a contract between Jacob Watson of New York City and his wife Sarah, relative to their separation, dated 1784, and a power of attorney granted to John Reid of Camden, S.C., in 1792. Many of the papers relate to property of John Murray and other members of the Murray family, including his wife, Hannah, their daughter, Hannah Lindley Murray, and their son, John R. Murray. Other parties named in the documents include James Wadsworth, Gilbert Colden Willett, William Ogden, William Beckford, and Susanna Lindley, the mother of Hannah Murray.

According to the 1867 edition of this work, sisters Hannah and Mary Murray of New York designed "The Toilet" by cutting out pictures from papers and pasting them into blank books, writing the inscriptions themselves. William Thomas Beckford, English writer and art collector. In 1782 he published his best known literary work, Vathek, first in French. His budding political career was derailed in 1784 by scandal surrounding his relationship with William Courtenay (1768-1835).
